Key Measurements You’ll Need
Headpiece (Crownpiece)
Measure around the top of the horse’s head, from one ear to the other, just behind the poll. This ensures that the bridle sits comfortably over the top of their head.
Noseband
Take the measurement from just below the cheekbones around the horse’s nose, behind the jaws. This should sit comfortably without being too tight or loose.Browband
Measure from one side of the horse’s forehead, just above the eyes, to the other side. You should measure to where the back of the headpiece would be (including the leather loops). This will ensure that the browband fits comfortably.Cheekpiece
With the bit you are planning to use, measure from the bit to the corner of the horses eye as this is where the buckles should attach to the headpiece. The cheekpieces should be long enough for the bridle to sit comfortably but not too long that the bit hangs too low, or the buckles end sit too high.Throatlash
Take the measurement around the horse’s throat, just below the throat latch. This should be snug but allow the horse to breathe easily and comfortably.
Additional Tips for Accurate Measurements:
- Have Help: It’s always best to have someone assist you while you take the measurements.
- Use a Soft Measuring Tape: This ensures flexibility and accuracy around the contours of your horse’s head.
- Fit Test: After taking the measurements, check the fit on your horse to ensure comfort and proper positioning of the bridle. Adjustments can be made for a perfect fit.
